...

Ankle sprains (stretching / tearing of ankle ligaments) are one of the most common types of ankle injuries. Ankle sprains occur when the foot is forced into an unnatural position, usually when encountering an uneven surface, however it can be due to the genetic makeup of the individual's foot.

ANKLE PAIN

If you have sprained your ankle, it will feel tender to touch and may show discoloration, swelling or bruising, which make walking uncomfortable and difficult.

There are different levels of severity for ankle sprains, and it is advised that you visit a doctor to treat the condition.

Treatment
  • See a clinician who may take an X-ray of the foot to evaluate the severity of the situation.

  • Plenty of rest for the foot.

  • Ice packs to reduce swelling.

  • Compression to restrict range of motion i.e. bandages, splints etc.

  • Try and elevate the foot as much as possible.

  • Ask your Physio, Podiatrist/Chiropodist or Doctor for advice on leg and ankle strengthening exercises.

Prevention

  • Prevent sprains by wearing good practical shoes and anti-slip devices on slippery surfaces, e.g. Spikys for icy conditions.

  • Exercise helps to strengthen muscles. Do some research on the best exercises for the lower leg.
